The new Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, Archbishop Christophe El-Kassis, delivered his first address at the UN on September 17. The Archbishop rejected “every form of intolerance, discrimination, and hate speech”. And: “Any hate speech - directed at either individuals or communities because of their religion, race, nationality, or any other characteristic - goes against the commandment to love one’s neighbor.” He believes, it “poisons public discourse, inflames division, and too often prepares the ground for violence and persecution.” Words that intentionally provoke hatred “cannot claim the protection of liberty.” Leo XIV appointed Monsignor El-Kassis to the United Nations in July.

The home of Cardinal Ernest Simoni, 97, in Florence was burgled while he was in Britain. The Albanian cardinal was received by King Charles III at Balmoral Castle on September 15. According to Corriere.it, thieves targeted the Curia-owned apartment in Piazza Duomo where Simoni lives with his nephew Tonin and his family. The Bishop has slightly underplayed responses to these in contrast to his more solid solid knowledge of Church teachings in other matters. I sense also the Bishop has some vulnerabilities he has to look out for. This is not a post to mud sling another VII bishop although that seems to be a happy playground for GTV.
